The test ensures that the Dry Riser System(s) are in satisfactory condition and all equipment is ready for use in accordance with BS EN 9990 2015. Testing and inspection of Dry Riser should be carried out every six months and includes an ‘Annual’ and ‘Intermediate’ inspection.
As required by BS9990-2015 each riser will be completely charged with water to a pressure equal to its design operating pressure measured at the inlet for a period of at least 15 min. During this period, an inspection of the system will be made to check whether there is any leakage of water at any of the joints or landing valves.
The following items will be inspected to comply with BS9990-2015:
- All inlets
- All landing valves
- All drain valves
- All door hinges
- All locking arrangements
Any remedial actions required will be recorded and reported.

Remedial Action and Re-test
In the unlikely event that it is not possible to rectify defects immediately, the faulty equipment will have an ‘Out of order’ notice.
Note: the responsible person for the premises should also inform the fire and rescue service immediately in order that alternative arrangements can be made to cover this deficiency if the need arises. When the installation is reinstated, the fire and rescue service should again be informed so that any alternative arrangements can be cancelled.

Following the recommendations of BS5839 Part 1 2017 (Fire Alarm British Standard), it is a mandatory requirement to have an up to date, clear and accurate Fire Alarm Zone Chart adjacent to your Fire Alarm Control Panel and any repeater panels you have in your premises.
The purpose of the Zone Chart is to assist persons responding to an alarm to quickly identify the specific location in the building and to help the Fire Brigade understand the building layout before they enter.
When the Fire Alarm System is installed, the building is divided into Fire Zones. Any Manual Call Point (Red Box) or Fire Detector that is fitted will trigger a particular zone when activated.
The Zone Chart shows the division of each zone area with a ‘You are Here’ arrow to identify the position of the Fire Alarm Panel. The view of the building should be orientated in relation to the Fire Alarm Panel position to minimise confusion.
