West Midlands Police Museum converted the Steelhouse Lane Lock-up into the new West Midlands Police Museum. Steelhouse Lane Lock-up opened in 1891 and operated until 2016. The building is separated by a tunnel that goes under Coleridge Passage which used to see prisoners being sent from the cells direct to the courts.
A variety of events are held at the Lock-up including open days, history talks, ghost hunts, theatre performances and group visits. The building is also available for hire for filming or corporate events.
Fixfire® provided internal temporary Fire Alarm and Fire Extinguisher coverage of this site in November 2021, whilst contractors carried out extensive refurbishment and renovation of the old Victorian Jailhouse to create a new Police Museum.
Fixfire® provided Fire Kart trolleys complete with Ultimex Fire Extinguishers throughout the site. The trolleys are fitted with the latest generation "FireSentry" Wireless Fire Alarm break glass call points, incorporating "First Aid" alert button.
In addition, Fixfire® supplied a Fire Alarm Base Station and separate GSM unit to automatically alert designated site staff via programmed mobile phone numbers when any alarm or first aid button was activated, to provide the 24-hour fire cover as required by the contractors’ insurance providers. This GSM feature also has the advantage of not requiring the constant presence of staff within the site office to monitor the base station during working hours. This unit can alert up to five different mobile numbers for "FIRE" as well as an additional five separate numbers for the "First Aid" alerts or can use the same numbers for both Fire & First Aid alerts.
