In order to comply with British Standard requirements, manual call points should normally be installed adjacent to final exits and on landings at upper floor levels. In addition, a person should not have to travel more than 45 metres along an escape route to reach the nearest manual call point.
A fire alarm system incorporating manual call points only and no additional Automatic Fire Detection (AFD) is designated Category M.
Fixfire® offers a complete range of manual call points including types which incorporate a plastic element which is resettable following activation.
The British Standard recommends that manual call points are tested on a weekly basis. Typically this will involve testing a different manual call point each week. On very large sites, it may be necessary to test more than one manual call point each week in order for every manual call point to be tested within a 12 month period.
Fixfire® carries extensive stocks of spare parts and ancillary items including replacement glass elements and test keys for most types of unit.
As part of our “maintenance service” we ensure that appropriate staff are equipped with the appropriate “test keys” and trained to carry out the weekly test.
Manual call points can be subject to misuse and abuse and Fixfire® provides a range of anti-tamper products to ensure that these essential life safety devices are protected from harm.
The “KeyCall®” call point has been developed by Fixfire® in response to growing demand from the Mental Health Care sector for a call point that can only be operated by staff.

22.3j) Ceiling obstructions, such as structural beams, deeper than 10% of the overall ceiling height should be treated as walls [see Figure 10a)]. NOTE 10 Within horizontal voids, beams or obstructions that are deeper than 10% of the overall depth of the void regardless of whether the void is above the ceiling or below the floor, ought to be treated as walls that subdivide the void.
